The first phase of sports medicine, which began in the fifties, was mainly dedicated to the health of the schoolchildren. The second phase, in the seventies, started to analyze the individual’s performance and that is when the instrumentalization of professionals in the area becomes necessary.
In Brazil, two types of equipment were available: ergometric and anthropometric devices. The importance of this fact is reflected in health congresses from 1985 to 1995 involving physical activities; about a third of the free themes presented in the biological areas were based on the use of these devices.
Anthropometric equipment started to be manufactured by CESCORF Equipamentos, officially founded on January 13, 1982, in Porto Alegre. In 1987 and 1992, we created the “compact” and “clinical” skinfold calipers models, respectively, as a way of adapting to the demand for more affordable devices. We surpassed the manufacture of 110,000 skinfold calipers and their availability was one of the factors that led Brazil to become one of the most developed countries in anthropometry on the international stage.
The greatest recognition of the quality of our equipment came with the publication by the International Society for the Advancement of Kinanthropometry – ISAK, of the International Standards for Anthropometric Assessment (2011); in this manual of anthropometric procedures, half of the devices photographed are of our manufacture.
